Laurent Esmilaire

Laurent Esmilaire is an architect and a tenured senior lecturer at the Paris-Est School of Architecture, Urban Planning and Regional Development, which he joined in 2014.

He initially taught design within the Theory & Design Master’s programme, led by Jacques Lucan. In 2016, he joined the team for the Architecture & Experience Master’s programme from its inception, led by Éric Lapierre.

Since 2022, he has been in charge of his own project studio for third-year Bachelor’s students in semesters 5 and 6, where he is conducting research into the relationships and analogies between food and architecture as potential responses to contemporary environmental and societal challenges. As part of this work, he is also involved in translating Philibert de l’Orme’s treatise in order to draw lessons from pre-industrial environmental architecture.

Alongside his project-based teaching, he also delivers lectures on constructive rationalism in architecture as part of the Compulsory Elective Courses (COO). He organises and leads tutorials, notably on architectural analysis covering the period 1920–1980 and on students’ civic engagement. He supervises professional dissertations for the HMONP programme. He has participated on several occasions in the Winter School at the École Paris-Est.

Laurent Esmilaire is a member of the curatorial team for the 2019 Lisbon Architecture Triennale, working with the Architecture & Experience team. He is co-curator of the exhibition Natural Beauty: meanings of construction, and co-author of the book of the same name. He is one of the three partners at the architectural practice Experience.
